Steady Circuits, an experimental pop project from New Mexico-based songwriter and producer Mike Marchant, will release its second full-length album on July 7, 2023. The ten-track album, titled “Physicalia,” will be released via Marchant’s Cloud Command imprint.

With “Physicalia,” Marchant offers the most accessible, pop-oriented songwriting of his career, while continuing the evolution of his experimental production style. A palette of analog synthesizers, hardware drum machines, mallet percussion instruments and electric guitars forms a dreamy, psychedelic atmosphere around Marchant’s rhythmic, hook-driven pop songs. The end result is a radio-friendly DIY pop album that reveals compositional depth, nuanced emotion, and inventive sonic exploration when studied closely.

“Earlier in my life, I struggled with health issues, and there were these long periods of time during which I felt totally disconnected from my body—like it was just this weird thing that existed to carry my mind around,” Marchant says. “I did a lot of work to reconnect and learn to be present in my body, which has been incredibly rewarding. These songs explore, in an abstract way, the significance of the body beyond its obvious physical functions.”

During his first few years of recording and performing, Mike Marchant was named “one of Denver’s most admired songwriters and performers” by the Denver Post and “one of Denver’s most celebrated songwriters” by Westword. The AV Club wrote that Marchant’s early projects “demonstrated a lackadaisical mastery of dreamy, druggy indie folk.” After being sidelined by cancer treatments and substance abuse issues, Marchant abandoned his creative projects and moved to New Mexico in pursuit of a quieter, healthier lifestyle. In 2018, he began making music again, forming an atmospheric indie rock band called Lightning Cult and his latest solo project, Steady Circuits. Marchant’s recent releases—crafted in his modest home studio, with little industry support or outside influence—have received consistent critical acclaim and strong support from independent radio programmers.
